On asylum seekers
John Gleeson writes: Re. “Myanmar’s refugee crisis all but ignored by Australia” (yesterday). Regarding the refugee crisis, just where are the church leaders of Australia in all this? With both Liberal and Labor leaders treating refugees as sub-human, why is there silence from the Catholic and Protestant faiths? Where is the leadership and straightforward moral stance? How about it, Pell and Co?
On Murdoch and power
Peter Matters writes: Re. “Beecher: how to manage politicians” (yesterday). Murdoch is an elderly has-been who still has the ability to bluff the public into believing that he has the influence to determine the government of Australia. In fact, the government of Australia has a simple and perfectly proper means to make him think twice about his gross abuse of freedom of the press.
RACP censorship
Dr Robert Marr writes: Re. “Dying With Dignity campaigner ‘shut out’ of doctors conference” (yesterday). I am a GP and fellow of public health medicine within the RACP. I am disgusted at the RACP uninviting Dr Syme because of pressure from some doctors within the RACP who don’t support the principle of academic free speech to discuss the right of terminally ill people to chose voluntary euthanasia. I am considering handing back my RACP fellowship in protest at their attack on academic free speech.
