Nine’s night in the metros in a close battle, with Seven second, Ten third and the ABC fourth.  But Seven was a clear winner in the regionals, where Ten was beaten into third by the ABC.

Ten’s Masterchef Australia was the most watched non news program nationally, with 1.496 million viewers last night, but it was let down by its lack of support in regional markets where it could only manage 362,000 viewers. In contrast, House Rules was just behind with 1.449 million national viewers and a large 565,000 in regional markets (equal top with Home and Away). Nine’s Love Child averaged 1.450 million viewers nationally, with a solid 479,000 in regional markets, showing up the weak support for Reno Rumble which now seems to be going through the motions and nothing better. The inmates know it’s a weak offering.

The ABC was solid. 7.30 was outstanding with a couple of top notch efforts (including the story about alleged graft on Nauru). Australian Story has the inside story on a shocking case of justice, Victoria style – it’s slack, crap and very, very sluggish. And Q&A was entertaining, and insightful with US guest, Cornel West showing up some of the rednecks in the audience and some of his fellow panelists with insights about Australian political debates.

On Sunday night, Seven was an easy winner in metro and regional markets as  the house reveal on House Rules accounted for both Masterchef Australia and the stumbling Reno Rumble on Nine. Nationally, House Rules beat Masterchef Australia by nearly 400,000 viewers, and beat Reno Rumble by well over half a million viewers (or more than 50% of Reno Rumble’s audience). No wonder Nine’s ad revenues are weak and profits are falling.

And the holiday yesterday saw a big fall in metro audiences for Sunrise (270,000), Today (220,000) and News Breakfast (101,000). That was to be expected, but the gap between Sunrise and Today of 50,000 viewers shows the depth of the problems with Today.
