Seven won metro and regional audiences easily (especially the latter). Nine was second, the ABC third and Ten fourth. The X Factor was top program again nationally, in the metros and regions with 1.841 million viewers, but shed 300,000 viewers, the second part of the Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door biopic lost around 200,000 viewers (but still had a very solid 1.822 million last night across the country). Nine’s The Block’s reveal episode lost 60,000 viewers to a solid 1.389 million, but Ten’s Biggest Loser Families lost around 170,000 viewers to 735,000 nationally. Viewers who didn’t return to the Peter Allen biopic last night missed the best part. Foolish people.
Insiders again proved to be the Sunday morning chat show to watch for the wrap of last week. Insiders had an estimated 625,000 nationally, including 430,000 in the metros The Bolt Report was the show to watch if you are an embittered, hard right supporter of Tony Abbott, as Cory Bernardi, who was his usual aggressive, ugly self. Bolt managed a small lift to 243,000 nationally, including 166,000 in the metros. The TV audience speaks again and they want discourse, gossip, some opinions, but not advocacy and rampant self-promotion and self-interest. And contrary to the Bolt Report headline “Labor loses the Canning by -election’, it was never Labor’s to lose, seeing the seat was ‘retained’ by the Liberal Party’s candidate. You have to have control or ownership of something to lose it, don’t you?
Turnbull’s coup and the looming cabinet changes boosted Insiders which saw a rise of around 100,000 in the size of its national audience on ABC and News 24, including 430,000 in the metros. The Bolt Report got a small boost as well.
News Breakfast had its highest ever weekly average last week — 188,000. And Sunrise’s offshore jaunt pushed the gap with Today to 94,000 a morning, close to if not the largest gap this year. Seven had its best week for months last week thanks to the start of The X Factor, the first part of the Peter Allen biopic, the debut of 800 Words, and solid audiences for the AFL finals.
