Australia’s biggest
city is finally preparing to join the “commuter paper” experiment that
has worked so well in Scandinavia, London and Melbourne. In Melbourne,
the News Ltd giveaway MX, having quickly seen off a challenge from The Age,
is going gangbusters. Now Sydney commuters will also get a free paper
to read on the train and bus. (The idea was shelved when MX started, but has now come back to life.)
But
editorial staff at News’s Surry Hills headquarters need not worry about
too much extra work. After writing local copy they will send it to
Melbourne, where the layout and sub-editing will be done by the MX team, who are looking forward to the extra work.
