Crikey readers may not have been surprised to see the Scott Morrison cosying up to Donald Trump, but they were still caught off guard by how quickly Australia’s dignity was sold for scraps. Readers had some choice grievances to air about the new friendship, some thoughts about how the relationship may come to haunt the prime minister, and some suggestions of how Australia can move forward.

On Scott Morrison’s new friend

Marian Arnold writes: I am old enough to remember the Whitlam dismissal and the belief that the US had played a role in it. I don’t think I am the only person who still feels very resentful. That the USA uses Australia as it likes is to our detriment.

Peter Bedwell writes: Of course our prime minister should not have gotten involved in Trump’s issues with Robert Mueller, or any of the other outrageous behaviour that passes for normal in the Trump administration. Should Biden succeed in gaining the Democratic Party nomination for the 2020 election and win, the view of Morrison as a prime minister and Trump ally will at least probably result in no more invites to White House dinners.

Charles Monk writes: I totally agree with this excellent article. The last paragraph says it all: our elected PM has sold the soul of this lovely country to a man who is hellbent on destroying democracy. Trump has rewritten the rules on what is acceptable behaviour. He has betrayed the people who elected him, I was one of them.

Bronwyn Humphries writes: This is the worst federal government in my lifetime and I am nearly seven decades old. Any politician with any common sense would avoid Trump like the plague. The federal LNP are like kids who didn’t expect to find the lolly jar and cannot help gorging themselves. Robbing the NDIS to “balance” the budget is such poor economic management and just another example of their incompetence.

John Hall writes: It’s time for the old farts (I am one) to step aside and let the enlightened high school kids take over — they actually care about our long term future and the failing “climate” of our democracy.
