Seven sinks, sunk by the flop Plate of Origin yet again. It’s turning out to be a dud year for Seven West Media CEO James Warburton, and this week is no better.

For the second night in a row Seven finished third in the main channels (where all the money is made) behind Nine, Ten and in front of the ABC (which ran second on Sunday night). In Sydney Seven was fourth in the main channels behind Nine, the ABC and Ten. Sydney is the home market for the networks and the biggest in-ad spend. That is a terribly embarrassing result for the network which is all but in the hands of its banks and needing a hit or three.

It has none. In breakfast, Sunset — sorry, Sunrise — is wallowing as Today and Karl Stefanovic pick up momentum. The ABC’s News Breakfast is also losing ground.

Plate of Origin averaged 592,000 last night nationally. It’s why Seven’s ratings are tanking, though the extent of the slip has been hidden by the solid AFL figures on Thursday through Saturday nights. The Masked Singer reveal averaged 1.3 million. The performance part averaged 1.08 million, while the program average of 1.19 million easily accounted for The Block‘s 1.03 million. Have You been paying Attention, which followed The Maksed Singer, had 1.03 million.

In breakfast a big change is coming if current trends continue. Today is looming only 8000 behind Sunrise in the metros, and less than 100,000 behind nationally. Sunrise had 447,000 national and 250,000 metro viewers, Today had 356,000 and 242,000, ABC News Breakfast had 302,000 and 196,000. Those are the best figures for Today for more than a year.
