It’s probably not stretching things too far to say that if I were a commercial TV executive in Australia I would be changing my name and self-isolating for a month or more (suitably medicated with some Dr Penfold’s finest glass-wrapped liquids).

Last night was just weak, a night to start binge medication as a TV viewer.

Tonight will not be much better, Thursday is a black hole waiting to be discovered and win a Nobel prize, Friday and Saturday are gimmes — NRL and AFL prelim finals, then the whole disheartening cycle kicks off again on Sunday night. Netflix me please, Scotty!

Nine won because The Block — 1.13 million — did better than any other program after 7pm while Seven, after its usual strong lead from 6 to 7pm, and then Home and Away until 7.30pm (890,000), crashed. Last night it was a repeat of the Jimmy Barnes biopic from a couple of years ago — 450,000 nationally from 7.30pm to 9.45pm.

On Ten, Junior MasterChef was watched by 736,000 from 7.30 to 9pm (which is about the cast’s bed time?).

In breakfast, Today’s picking up, again: Sunrise led with 454,000/250,000 viewers; Today 327,000 and 224,000; and ABC News Breakfast, 294,000/196,000.

In regional markets Seven News, 512,000; Seven News 6.30, 456,000; Home and Away, 335,000; 7pm ABC News, 323,000; The Chase Australia 5.30pm 315,000.
