The Block on Nine (1.45 million) beat The Masked Singer on Ten (1.04 million for the reveal, 816,000 for the performance) and the latest eggbeater ep of 7NEWS Investigates, The Disappearance of William Tyrrell (1.08 million). The Masked Singer reveal added more than 200,000 viewers from last week.
The first ep of Fires on the ABC attracted 564,000 viewers — it’s far too soon to be making a TV drama out of the pain and agony that still is so obvious for so many people. Restoration Australia on the ABC (720,000) was the lead-in, and the turnoff of 156,000 was significant.
The AFL Grand Final — 3.91 million viewers (3 million in the metros and 903,000 in the regions). Melbourne, 1.63 million (naturally) and another 197,000 watching via the net (BVOD). In 2020, 3.81 million watched on Seven, 2.97 million in the metros and 833,000 in the regions, and 1.58 million watched in Melbourne.

I do not agree with the comment made about ‘Fires’. While I admit I was not directly affected at the time, I felt that episode 1 faithfully reflected the reality of the situation and there were young firies in dire situations. The ember attack on the truck was in incredibly realistic. Looking forward to next week now
I agree that ‘Fires’ was a bad decision & chose not to tune in. A documentary about the real survivors & real victims would have been worthwhile, particularly as some still remain unsettled, without homes.
Drama, as an art form, serves vital personal and cultural needs. It mediates reality for us so that we can experience, in this case, horror and tragedy, vicariously. There have been many interviews with victims and firefighters. The politicians have ignored them. They’ve ignored the scientists and other experts. Whatever reminds us, forewarns us, pushes us to look and learn, is welcome. I didn’t enjoy, as such, the first episode but found it very moving. I remember a drama series years ago that had a strong emphasis on rural bushfire fighting and it’s certainly time for another one. Presumably most Australians don’t follow international news, the calamitous fires in the Western US, Canada, southern Mediterranean, South America. Well, too bad. It’s coming here again soon, already happening in northern Australia. The next long drought will dry out our soils and forests and set us up for another killer season. Does no one listen to Shane Fitzsimmons either? If the public chooses not to watch, that’s their loss of both a compelling drama and a terribly important topic.
Just curious how the Rugby went against the AFL grand final? Plus of course the League games if possible.
Would you consider a Top 10 sporting events list occasionally? Be interesting to compare to the TV rights deals each sport gets. Lots of codes seem to be close to financial trouble lately
