Electorate analysis: The electorate of Cranbourne extends from the inland edge of the coastal centre of Frankston eastwards through Carrum Downs to Cranbourne itself, a satellite town some 40 kilometres south-east of the city centre. It was notionally Labor upon its creation at the 1992 election, but a 9.1 per cent swing delivered it to Liberal candidate Gary Rowe. Labor won the seat for the first time as part of the 2002 landslide, when Rowe was unseated by a 9.4 per cent swing. The new member was Jude Perera, a Sri Lankan-born software developer and market researcher associated with the Socialist Left faction. Perera did well to increase his vote slightly at the 2006 election on both the primary vote (up 0.9 per cent to 55. 2 per cent) and two-party preferred (0.5 per cent to 61.3 per cent). Gary Rowe has returned to the fray as Liberal candidate, attempting to win the seat he lost eight years ago.
