Electorate analysis: Preston covers suburbs in Melbourne’s inner north, including Reservoir and Ruthven along with Preston itself. Its status as a safe seat goes back to its creation in 1945, and unlike electorates immediately to the south it is sufficiently removed from the inner city that the Greens are unlikely to pose a threat. Michael Leighton held the seat from 1988 to 2006, when he was succeeded by one of his staffers, Robin Scott. Both are members of the Labor Unity (Right) faction.
