How did you feel when the election was called on Thursday? Relieved? Bored? Furious?

It took him a minute, but Scott Morrison finally sallied down to Yarralumla on Thursday to get this thing on the road and it’s already shaping up to be a hard and dirty few weeks to May 18.

Crikey won’t be riding alongside Morrison and Shorten on those tightly media managed campaign buses. Instead, we’re embedding reporter Charlie Lewis in Warringah to watch that messy fight unfold.

We’re taking as many political claims from all sides as possible and running them through our nonsense filters. And we’re relying on you to send us snapshots from the ground, either to boss@crikey.com.au or via the tip line.

Have a great weekend,

Fascists’ tricks of deception are working on a media preoccupied with snobbery
It was the sort of conversation you’d have with a real-life Pepe the Frog. You tell the fascist they’re a fascist and they deny it with a joke. I have read in online glossaries that this is known as “hiding power-level”, but who knows what they’re calling it now The only thing to know is the trick of fascist deception. — Helen Razer

In political advertising, the Liberals have always looked after their mates
The Coalition has always billed taxpayers for its partisan advertising and always done so via dodgy means. The notorious “unchain my heart” ads from the introduction of the GST two decades ago weren’t by any means the worst of it. Government advertising in the later Howard years for campaigns such as WorkChoices saw tens of millions of dollars handed to Liberal Party mates at the behest of an internal Liberal committee that had no authority to direct spending. — Bernard Keane

Using taxpayer money to fund ads doesn’t just benefit politicians — it’s money in the bank for their friends in the media.
